Ruby & Grogu's Story

🚨 Emergency Intake 🚨

Ruby and Grogu, approximately 6½ and 7 years old.

Early this morning, Ruby was found unresponsive and believed to have passed. Just after 2 PM, when the husband went to bury her, she began to move. They immediately searched for help, found our page, and followed the steps shared during Teaching Tuesday. Because of that quick action, they were able to get Ruby moving again.

The family then drove about 2½ hours from Albany to bring both gliders to us, along with all of their supplies.

They recently welcomed a baby and had been trying for months to find a new home for Ruby and Grogu, knowing they could no longer provide the level of care needed while caring for their little girl. During our intake conversation, we learned they were feeding a proper diet, but the room their cage was in was kept a little below 60°F. They were not aware that temperatures that low are dangerous for sugar gliders and can lead to serious issues, including crash-like symptoms.

The hopeful part here is that if temperature was the primary factor and not something like a genetic organ failure or a bacterial infection, Ruby may just need supportive care and time to recover. If that is the case, this is something we can work through with proper warmth, hydration, and monitoring.

We are hoping to get Ruby into the vet tomorrow for evaluation so we can determine exactly what we are dealing with and move forward with the right plan.

If anyone would like to help support Ruby and Grogu’s care, donations are always appreciated:

I have partnered with Sugar Haven Rescue in helping to raise money for all the care and medical needs for Sugar Gliders within their organization.

Sugar Haven Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Barre, Massachusetts, dedicated exclusively to the rescue, rehabilitation, education, and responsible placement of sugar gliders.

How does Sugar Haven Rescue help?

The organization serves the community by:

• Taking in surrendered, neglected, and emergency cases from across the country

• Providing medical care including neuters, dental procedures, diagnostics, and emergency treatment

• Collecting and tracking detailed medical and behavioral data to better understand patterns in sugar glider health

• Collaborating with veterinary professionals and laboratories to contribute to ongoing research efforts

• Planning and conducting structured studies aimed at improving long term outcomes for captive sugar gliders

• Offering mentorship and education to both new and experienced owners

• Guiding families through proper diet, cage safety, bonding, and long term care

• Assisting breeders and owners in crisis to prevent neglect and improper rehoming

• Ensuring every adopter is thoroughly vetted and mentored when necessary

Sugar Haven Rescue does not simply rehome animals. The organization advocates, educates, collects meaningful data, and works toward long term improvements in standards of care. Every intake is medically evaluated. Every adopter is screened. Mentorship is provided whenever needed. Every glider matters.

Community support allows Sugar Haven Rescue to continue funding veterinary care, coordinating multi state transport, responding to urgent cases, and advancing research that benefits sugar gliders nationwide.
